Blazers Back With a Bang

It had been almost 2 years since the Varsity girls soccer team has taken the field. After having last season ripped from them due to the shutdowns and Covid-19. So there was going to be some nerves and rust to knock off, as they traveled down to Maryland to open MDCC league play against New Life Christian School. It was a much different starting lineup from the last time they took the field as they would have lost 2 groups of seniors New Life opened the scoring about 10 minutes into the game with a distance shot. The Blazers would battle back and even the score about 5 minutes later when sophomore Ruth Hepler finished a breakaway. This would prove to be a theme of the game. New Life put away another goal and took the lead again, 5 minutes after the Blazer equalized. New Life's striker was able to control a ball in the 18 and rip another clean shot. Once again the Blazers answered shortly after, as New Life gave up a penalty kick and Laurel Reitz was called upon to take it and she

Blazers Still Dancing

The Lady Blazers found themselves in the same spot they found themselves the last 2 years, hosting a first-round MDCC playoff contest. While it has been a different opponent every year the result has held the same, a resounding Blazer victory. This time the team was the Grace Academy Knights.  While it might have been a clear March afternoon outside, inside the gym umbrellas were needed as the Blazers were raining down 3s from all over the court. Mollee Stake and Amber Yanosik each hit a pair in the first quarter and from there the Blazers never looked back. The Blazers also played relentless man-to-man defense. At the end of the 1st quarter, the Blazers were up 13-4. In the 2nd quarter the Blazers showed that they could win in multiple ways. They switched their defense to a stfiling 2-3 zone. While on the offensive end their focus turned from the perimeter to the paint, as they would dominate their. Junior big Sarah Vandersleen feasted on the block. She would score 6 points in the qu

Blazers Build Momentum

The past couple of weeks from the Blazers have been up and down. They have faced some adversity and gotten out of the regular season flow. Typically they would be playing 2-3 games a week, this has not been the case lately. Due to snow, and conditions out of their control, they have a very disjointed end to their regular season.  They have only played about 5 games in the last 3 weeks, and that has had its effect on the team. They have lost 3 tough games in that stretch, one of them losing at the buzzer to the #1 seed in the conference, and another heartbreaker to their cross-town rival. Along with that, they have multiple games canceled, some even just a few hours before tip-off. Yet that has not deterred or distracted them from their goals and finishing the season off the best way they know. They traveled down to Fredrick, MD to take on the New Life Christian School Rams, and they were able to get back to their winning ways. New Life gave them everything they could handle early and

Blazers Tame the Lions

The Lady Blazers continued their winning ways on Friday evening as they were able to notch another home conference win as they would defeat the Lions from Broadfording Christian Academy, 49-16. It took the Blazers a couple of minutes to get going as the game started a little slow and was tied 4-4, 2 minutes into the game. "Broadfording was very scrappy tonight and gave us everything we could handle in the first couple minutes," remarked Coach Ward. Molle Stake was the spark plug for the offense as she was able to hit 2 3's in the first quarter.  It was the 2nd quarter where the girls really turned it on. Coach Ward made the call to switch from their 2-3 zone to a man-to-man defense, to try and speed up the game as the team really excels in transition and when they can run and gun. Ward commented, "I really like the pressure we created with our man-to-man defense tonight. The Blazers would win the 2nd quarter 18-3. Amber would catch fire from behind the 3 point arc a

Blazers Topple Grace

This past Saturday the Lady Blazers were looking at a chance to pick up a 2nd straight conference win in as many days. The night before the Blazers were finally able to take down rival Shalom, on the road. About 24 hours later the girls took to their home floor to prove that Friday night was no fluke. CVCS was able to sweep the regular-season series against the Grace Academy Knights.  As they would go onto win 61-32. It was a close game at the end of the 1st as CVCS lead 10-5. It took a while for the Blazers to get into their rhythm. In the second quarter, they were able to create a little more space on the scoreboard as they would go into the locker room up 28-11. Laurel Reitz lead the charge for the Blazers with 10 first-half points, as it turned out she was only just getting started.  Whatever Coach Ward said at halftime lit a spark and the Blazers all but ended the game in the 3rd quarter. "It was that 3rd quarter where we put them away. We outscored them 22-10" Ward rem

Girls Push Win Streak to 3

The Lady Blazers got off to a hot start and never looked back against Faith. They lead from tip to buzzer and controlled the game. Laurel Reitz and Amber Yanosik set the tone early scoring all of the team's first-quarter points. Amber was able to stretch the defense out by hitting some early 3's. She was then able to attack the closeouts and get to the rim. While Laurel was getting loose out in the open court. She was causing havoc on defense causing turnovers of all kinds, which would lead to easy lay-ups on the other end. She even had one for the highlight reel where she was able to spin away from the defender and finish with her right hand.  The Blazers ended any hope of a competitive game by winning the first quarter 21-6. Amber had 9 in the first quarter, while Laurel paced the Blazers with 12. At the half, these two had combined for 30 points. The final score was 55-27. The defense was really what won the game. They started out in man to man defense which was causing Fai
